Travel the four elements of Cape Town

Conscious journeys around Cape Town, curated by a professional historian and led by expert guides, inspired by the elements of water, earth, fire, and wind.

Our philosophy

Feel Cape Town through four sacred elements

Every experience we create is shaped around one of the four elements: a lens for exploring Cape Town's landscapes, its history, and your own sense of stillness.

Water

Purifies and cleanses. The element of emotion and intuition, it brings awareness back to yourself.

The Atlantic is cold and mineral rich. You come out of it awake, skin alive, head clear.

Its other face waits in the Cederberg. Rock pools, sun warm and glass clear, where you float like a mermaid and lose the afternoon.

Earth

Grounds and steadies. The nourishing element, it calms and restores.

Some of the oldest stone on the planet. In the Cederberg the paintings are thousands of years old, and the rock was ancient before anyone touched it.

Stand on ground that old and nothing feels urgent.

Fire

Illuminates and leads. The element of will and courage, it transforms.

The sun on red sandstone at dusk. The flame we cook on when the dark comes down.

Drums, cacao, tea passed around. Fire is where strangers stop being strangers.

Wind

Humbles and empowers. The element of breath and clarity, it opens the sky.

In 1488 Dias named it the Cape of Storms. The king changed it to Good Hope so the merchants would still sail.

But this is a coast of freedom, not caution. The wind pulls you outward, the storm reminds you that you are alive.

Our approach

Research, not a script

The landscape is the reason you come. What you learn while you are in it is the reason the day stays with you.

Every journey we run is built on real research. Along the way you get what we think of as entertaining lectures, delivered on a rock or in the car or over tea rather than in a hall: South African history, economics and politics, culture and anthropology, the social questions this country is still working through, and the natural history of the place you are standing in.

This is not a script read off a card. Our founder and co-founder are researchers on sub-Saharan Africa, and our guides come from academic backgrounds in their own fields. When you ask a question, you get an answer from someone who has actually studied it.

Experiences

Journeys we lead

Small group experiences led by specialists who live here: a historian of sub-Saharan Africa, an archaeologist, a big wave surfer, a yoga and meditation teacher. Rare knowledge, and the places that come with it.

Cederberg: Ancient Earth & Fire

A two-day journey into the ancient Cederberg, a landscape of glowing red sandstone and some of the oldest rock art on Earth, where you walk in the footsteps of the First People and touch the deep roots of the human story.

At the heart of this journey is the ancient art and history of the San (Khoisan), one of humanity's oldest living cultures. We hike to caves holding paintings thousands of years old, and Jack, a UCT-trained archaeologist who studied this very art, reveals their meaning, their mystery, and the lives of the people who made them.

2 days, 1 night · Rock art & ancient history · Fire ceremony · Private & small-group · Guided by Jack
Full itinerary & details

The elements move through everything. Earth in the red rock, the caves, the ancient ground beneath your feet. Fire in the high desert sun, in wild fish cooked over open flame beside the caves, and, as darkness falls, in a fire ceremony with the deep, grounding rhythm of African drums beneath a vast sky.

Between the stories, there's time to simply be: cooling off in crystal-clear rock pools, warming in the sun, and letting the silence of the mountains settle in.

Day one: Early arrival and exploration · fire-cooked fish lunch by the caves · hike to the San rock art · cool off in the rock pools · evening fire ceremony with African drums.

Day two: A different hike route to the waterfall · fire-cooked lunch · more ancient South African history from Jack · return to Cape Town by evening.

A guide and UCT-trained archaeologist, Jack wrote his thesis on the San rock art of the Cederberg, and has a specialist knowledge of Cape flora. He has spent years in these mountains, and the stories you'll hear at the caves come from real expertise, not a guidebook.

Lion's Head: Sunrise, Breathwork & Going Within

While the city below is still sleeping, we rise to meet the light. A gentle walk brings us to a quiet place above the Atlantic, where the whole of Cape Town spreads out beneath you and the horizon begins to soften. This is the hour when everything is still. No traffic, no voices, just the mountain, the ocean, and the first colour in the sky.

Half-day · Breathwork & guided meditation · Tea ceremony · A crystal to take home · Guided by Jack
Full morning & details

As we walk, Jack shares the story of how this city came to be, the fynbos around us, found nowhere else on Earth, and the geology of the mountain itself: Table Mountain is quartzitic rock, essentially a mountain of quartz, which is why so many have long felt this place holds an energy of its own.

At the top we settle onto cushions facing east, begin with breathwork, and move into a guided meditation as the sun lifts out of the horizon. Jack leads gently, with cues throughout, so no experience is needed. Above the ocean, above the sleeping city, there is space to simply go within.

Afterwards, a tea ceremony with indigenous South African herbs, buchu among them, sipped slowly with the warmth, the view, and the quiet before the world starts moving.

Before we part, each guest receives a crystal chosen for them, one that reflects where they are and what they're carrying. A small stone to take home from a mountain made of stone.

The morning: Pre-dawn pick-up from your accommodation · gentle hike with conversation on Cape Town's history, Cape flora and geology · breathwork and guided meditation at sunrise · tea ceremony with indigenous herbs · your crystal · walk back down.

Afterwards (optional): Cool off in the Camps Bay tidal pool, or Jack drops you home, or at a spot for a wholesome breakfast.

Meet Jack, your guide

A guide and UCT-trained archaeologist with a deep knowledge of ancient South African history and Cape flora. Jack leads the breathwork and meditation and takes photographs along the way, so you leave with images as well as memories.

  • Duration: Approx. 4–5 hours (start time shifts with the season: summer sunrise is near 5:30am, winter closer to 7:45am)

Silvermine: Yoga, Cacao and Stillness

High above the city, in a part of Table Mountain National Park that most visitors never reach, there is a quiet dam surrounded by fynbos and open sky. No cable cars, no crowds, no phone signal. Just the mountain, the water, and space to breathe.

Full day · Hatha yoga · Cacao ceremony · Easy hike · Optional swim · Lunch with Tatiana · Guided by Jack and a yoga teacher we work with
Full day & details

We collect you from your accommodation in the morning and drive up into the reserve. There is no climb to get there: a short, easy walk through the fynbos brings us to the spot, a place locals know and keep to themselves.

We begin with an hour of hatha yoga on the grass, led by one of our partner teachers, certified and long established in Cape Town. Practising outdoors changes everything. The ground is uneven and alive, the air moves, and there is nothing between you and the sky.

Afterwards, Jack leads a cacao ceremony, a slow and warming ritual that opens the heart and settles the mind. We share fresh fruit and nuts, and let the morning stretch out.

Then a short hike, thirty to forty minutes, gentle and genuinely beautiful, ending at a viewpoint over the Noordhoek valley and the long white sweep of Long Beach below.

For those who want it, there is time to swim in the dam before we head back down. Cold, clear mountain water, and one of the better ways to spend a morning in this part of the world.

Then lunch, and this is where the day opens up. Tatiana joins you at the table, and we talk properly about South Africa: its culture and history, and the social and political situation as it stands now. Not a lecture, a conversation, and the sort you can only have with someone who has spent years studying this country.

The day: Pick-up from your accommodation, around 9am or a time that suits you · drive into the reserve · short walk to the dam · one hour of hatha yoga on the grass · cacao ceremony with fresh fruit and nuts · easy hike to the Noordhoek and Long Beach viewpoint · optional swim in the dam · lunch with Tatiana, and a conversation on South African culture, history and politics · drop-off at your accommodation.

Table Mountain: The Long Way Up and the Quiet at the Top

Table Mountain has a hidden side. Above the cliffs that everyone photographs from below, the mountain flattens into a wide plateau of streams, reservoirs and silence, and almost nobody who visits Cape Town ever sees it.

Full day · Challenging climb · Buchu tea at the dam · History and flora along the way · Guided by Jack
Full day & details

We start from Constantia early, before the heat, and make our way up the mountain's green eastern flank. It is a long and genuinely demanding climb, but nothing about it is technical and no equipment is needed. Just a steady rhythm, shade, and the sound of water.

At the top, the mountain opens out. We walk to the dam, where there is a stretch of white sand at the water's edge, and sit down. Jack brews buchu tea, an indigenous South African herb, and for a while there is nothing to do but drink it and look at where you are.

On the way down, Jack talks. About the history of this land, the people who moved across it long before the city existed, and the plants growing around you. The descent is when the mountain gives you its stories.

The day: Pick-up from your accommodation at a time that suits you, ideally around 9am before the heat · backpacks, water and snacks provided · the climb up from Constantia · buchu tea on the white sand at the dam · descent with conversation on South African history, ancient peoples and Cape flora · transfer back to your accommodation.

James guides you privately in the water. A big wave surfer and experienced snorkelling guide, he knows this coastline in a way you only get from years in it.

Wine, Art and Padel

A day through the winelands, built around three things worth stopping for: South African art, two estates we go back to again and again, and a padel court with a mountain behind it.

Around 9 hours · Norval Foundation · Anura and Tokara · Padel on the vineyard · Tokai and Stellenbosch
Full day & details

We start in Tokai at the Norval Foundation, where the collection of South African art and sculpture sets up everything that follows. Then we drive out to Stellenbosch.

The first is Anura, the one with the view: vines running up into the mountains, and padel courts on the property, so if you want to play, you play.

The second is Tokara, high on the Helshoogte Pass and serious about art. A contemporary collection hangs in the tasting lounge, and the terrace looks the whole way across the valley to False Bay and Table Mountain beyond it.

Surfing with a Legend: Ian

There is a beach down the peninsula that the tour buses do not know about. That is where you learn.

5 to 6 hours · 1.5 to 2 hours in the water · Victoria Road and Chapman's Peak · Boards and gear provided · Taught by Ian
Full day & details

Your teacher is Ian, who in 1999 won the Reef ISA Big Wave World Championship at Todos Santos in Mexico with Cass Collier, a victory that changed what South African big wave surfing looked like to the rest of the world. He has lived on this coast ever since, in Scarborough on the edge of the Cape Point reserve, and he shapes boards of every shape by hand.

You will not be surfing Dungeons. You will be on a quiet beach with someone who has surfed the biggest water on the planet and would rather teach you properly than impress you. We check the conditions in advance and take you out in calm water and small waves. If you already surf and want something more, say so when you book and we will plan for it.

Tatiana drives you there and back, and the driving is half the pleasure. We take the long way around the peninsula on Victoria Road and Chapman's Peak Drive, two of the most beautiful roads anywhere, cut into the cliff with the Atlantic below you the whole way.

Afterwards you sit down together for a holistic lunch and a conversation about South Africa and the element you have just spent the morning in.

The day: Pick-up from your accommodation with Tatiana · the drive around the peninsula on Victoria Road and Chapman's Peak Drive · conversation on the way · 1.5 to 2 hours of surfing with Ian on a quiet beach · holistic lunch and a talk on South Africa and the water element · drop-off at your accommodation.

  • Duration: 5 to 6 hours in total

The founder

Tatiana

Africanist with a speciality on South Africa and knowledge of Afrikaans, writer.

I have always looked for the unconventional way of doing things, living, and travelling. Cape Town is the most unconventional place I have ever found.

The nature here changes your biology. The cold of the Atlantic, the wind that does not stop for days, the sun that is harder than anywhere else I have been. You do not look at this landscape. It gets into you and it changes how you think.

I spent four years studying South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, first at MGIMO in Moscow and then at Stellenbosch University here. I interned at the African Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and in a research group at the Higher School of Economics working on African critical mineral resources. My interests run from African politics and history to a more holistic view of life, where a person is an inseparable part of nature rather than a visitor to it.

So I invite you to take part in this nature rather than look at it. To meet its elements in the journeys my friends, my colleagues and I have built. I think Cape Town is the greatest place on earth to find yourself in nature, and I would like to show you why.

I do this because life is an adventure, and expertise makes the adventure larger. My colleagues and I have spent years learning this place. On our journeys you see it first through our lenses, and then you leave with your own.

"You do not look at this landscape. It gets into you."
The co-founder

Daria

Africanist by profession. Researcher on Southern Africa with a PhD in Political Science.

I have come to African studies driven by a passion to explore how and why people engage in social movements. I started my journey by researching communities that fought for housing rights in South Africa.

When I spent several months in the field, in the townships of Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, writing my PhD, I discovered a fantastic diversity of lives and cultures, and became confident that our past and our collective history shape our complex present. On my continuous journey into South Africa's people's homes, I realised that my soul had become an anthology of the lives I had encountered. My passion for research and fieldwork opened new and fantastic doors: I was invited by Oxford University to take part in a three-year international research project on the history of the Cold War in Africa. I am currently writing a book on the Cold War in Africa, an outcome of this research, and my inspiration comes from the places hidden around Cape Town.

The concept of Four Elements came out of collaborative work and deep conversations with Tatiana about what a truly educational, spiritually enriching outdoor experience should look like. We invite you to immerse yourself with us in this new research experience, and discover your own element in the adventure.

"My soul became an anthology of the lives I've encountered."
